Scattered around the world, there are countless paradises. Today we talk to you about one of them: Lanzarote.

There is a false concept that, to find our particular Eden, we must cross several oceans and continents. Sometimes, it's closer than it seems. Like the island of Lanzarote, a unique place for the practice of watersports.

Surrounded by crystal-clear waters and a seabed of enormous beauty, the Lanzarote coast brings together an important variety of athletes of different kinds. Surfers, divers and kitesurfers share this small corner of the Atlantic with SUP and bodyboarders. And even the smallest boats, such as a jet ski or kayak, rub shoulders with yachts and boats of considerable size.

Not so long ago, the usual sight was to see only small fishing boats on the water, because years ago the island lived off the primary sector. Despite the emergence of tourism, Lanzarote knew how to preserve its charm and diversify its tourist activity, making the nature activities in the Canary Islands one of its main complaints.

In a successful attempt to move away from drunken tourism, Lanzarote has opted to establish itself as one of the preferred destinations for young people who dedicate their holidays to healthier habits. Hence the emergence of diving, kitesurfing and SUP courses in Famara and, above all, the surf schools.

Next, we show you which sports are successful in Canarian waters, and which points on the island of Lanzarote are the best to practice them.

Surf

European Hawaii is here. With top-level spots such as El Quemao and La Santa, Lanzarote is one of the reference points for surfing worldwide. Great surfers of recognized prestige travel to Lanzarote just to try the famous El Quemao wave, a powerful tube that comes out on days when there is a swell.

But we're not just talking about a special place for experienced surfers. There are different beaches and each one for a different type of surfer. For beginners, there is Famara. With its six kilometers of white sand, it is one of the most important centers on the island for this sporting activity.

Students of surf camps and other activities prefer the tranquility of a sun lounger on the beach to forget about civilization for a few hours. And the people of Famara Cove survives thanks to lovers of watersports, in an environment where time stopped at some point with the streets still to be paved.

Kitesurfing

Kitesurfing requires wind. Famara beach usually has the ideal conditions for performing pirouettes in the air and also for executing, with some ease, the most basic movements of this sport. It has several interesting peaks in the deepest areas, which will make you enjoy the waves even more.

Normally, the weather is good from May to September, although it is possible to practice kitesurfing all year round; especially if your intention is to get started in this activity.

Dive

The sports offer continues underwater.

Have you ever dived at night? The night dives at Playa Chica, in Puerto del Carmen, have an unparalleled appeal. Access is quite simple. Two dams prevent waves from breaking in the diving area and make night dives a safe adventure for beginners.

In any case, the seabed is so spectacular that it leaves any diver speechless, regardless of their level. Among a sandy and rocky bottom, there is a very rich and varied marine life that must be discovered in first person.

Windsurfing

Windsurfers are divided into two zones. You will find those with more boards at Jameos del Agua, while newbies tend to be seen at Las Cucharas.

Located in the north of the island, the Jameos del Agua enjoy some more than interesting left turns, especially when the NE trade winds are noticeable. We are talking about a place for experts and entering the water is already a nuisance, especially with full tide.

If you want to avoid being overwhelmed by the environment, the most sensible thing to do is to try Las Cucharas.

HIS P

SUP, also known as stand up paddle, is a relatively new sport in Europe. It consists of standing on a board and moving over the water with the help of an oar. The ideal conditions for SUP are the opposite of surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing.

The less wind and waves there are, the easier it will be to take your SUP board out for a ride. If the weather is good, it is possible to practice this discipline almost anywhere in Lanzarote. It is a good exercise to strengthen the upper and lower trunk and a good workout to improve body balance.

It is proven: the paradise of watersports, and more and more of those from the mainland, has its own name and is called Lanzarote. Choose your favorite and dare to practice it in this unique environment.

  1. On my vacation I was able to kayak, jet ski and scuba dive. Since I went for only a few days I didn't have time to visit Famara where some friends recommended I rent a surfboard and go try it.

I'll leave it pending for another time

They took me diving to Puerto del Carmen, I don't know what area exactly but there was a port and that whole area was pretty good. They told me that many years ago it was much better but that there was a plague of hedgehogs and it devastated the entire area a lot. A shame really, I hope it doesn't take much longer to get it back.

It was also my first time on a jet ski, I don't know if it is considered a water sport but it really left me with very good memories.

I also want to try Kitesurfing but I'm already quite scared because of the kite issue.

Thank you very much for the water sports suggestions!

  2. Hello good! Very good article and very complete. Lanzarote is a paradise, and for those of us who love the sea even more so. It offers a wide variety of places to go with the incentive of enjoying its waves or its seabed (among other things).

    All the best!
