No visit to the province of Jaén would be complete without a walk through the Mining District and a review of its rich archaeological heritage. This includes the archaeological complex of Cástulo, with pre-Roman and Roman remains, the mining area of Linares and La Carolina and evidence of several battles.

That is why this year, the Jaén Provincial Council offers those over 65 years of age an opportunity to visit the Linares – La Carolina Mining District.

Linares-La Carolina Mining District

The Linares and Carolina area has been a mining area for several centuries, specialized in the extraction of lead. This has left in both towns and their surroundings a large number of vestiges of all kinds (laundries, foundries, chimneys...), all of them interconnected by disused roads and railways. The last mine closed in 1991, and many facilities can now be visited.

CÁSTULO ARCHAEOLOGICAL SET

Within the Mining District you can also see the remains of the city of Cástulo, founded about 4,000 years ago and which are the largest pre-Christian site in the province of Jaén. They are located 6 km from the town of Linares and can be visited together with the archaeological museum of Linares, where many of the most interesting finds are preserved.

A VISIT TO SPANISH HISTORY: BAILÉN AND THE NAVAS OF TOLOSA

The last stops on the route are two military history museums.
The first, that of the Battle of Bailén, is located in Bailén, near Linares. It focuses on remembering the battle that took place on July 19, 1808 between French and Spanish troops within the framework of the Napoleonic Wars.
The other museum is dedicated to the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, which took place on July 16, 1212. This victory opened the way for the peninsular kingdoms to reconquer the area, at that time under Muslim rule.
