What to see in A Coruña: 6 places that seem like poetry

Out in the world
Out in the world

Close your eyes and think of an image that represents the province of A Coruña.

If images of cliffs, trails, forests, waterfalls or idyllic rivers full of mystery and charm come to mind, you are completely right, because that is what you will find. If you look for it.

After our Galician journey, if you ask me to close my eyes and think of a cliff, those of Vixía de Herbeira come to mind.

If someone asked me to think of a forest, without a doubt, I would think of El Refugio de los Verdes or Las Fragas del Eume.

Ask me to think of an imposing waterfall that falls directly onto the sea and I will not hesitate to think of La Cascada de Ézaro.

Heard “Path by the sea” and I think of Arteixo.

To finish, I'm thinking that a little bit of everything would be good when traveling the route that separates Loiba and San Andrés de Teixido.

As you can see, today I closed my eyes and thought about A Coruña.

Vixía de Herbeira Cliffs

Imposing due to their height and the views that can be enjoyed from them. They are located very close to Cedeira on the route that leads to San Andrés de Teixido, which we will talk about later.

The best place to enjoy them is at the Garita de Herbeira. La Garita is a small coastal surveillance post that dates back to the 18th century and is located at the highest point from the sea (more than 600 m).

Green Refuge

Located in the municipality of Coristanco, it is a beautiful natural space full of that mysterious atmosphere that surrounds these places.

The refuge is a recreational area that has been perfectly integrated into a group of islets in the Anllóns River. There are wooden bridges, waterfalls, barbecues and above all “muiños” (mills in Galician).

From here you can start some routes that go into the forest so that you can look for the “Meigas” that inhabit it, because “there are, there are” I tell you.

If you are one of those who enjoy moving through the water the most, the mouth of the Anllóns River is very popular with kayakers. In fact, many places in La Coruña are conducive to enjoying this sport; like in this kayak activity on the Ulla river, in Vedra.

The Fragas del Eume

One of the best examples of Atlantic forest that we can find in all of Europe. This Natural Park runs along the banks of the Eume River, covering several municipalities, such as Cabanas, Pontedeume, As Pontes…

The best way to know the Fragas It is on foot, since this way you can let yourself be overcome by a thousand shades of green, orange and brown melted in a dream forest that will immerse you in a halo of mystery of such caliber that there will be moments in which you will believe you have seen little elves frolicking among the trees.

Spend some time park information office where they will advise you wonderfully on the itinerary that best suits your interests.

I chose to start from Portal de Caaveiro to take the 7.5 linear kilometers of the Os Encomendeiros route that ends at the famous Caaveiro Monastery.

The Ézaro Waterfall

The Jallas River literally falls into the sea in this waterfall cornered between a hydroelectric plant and the marina of the town of Dumbría.

The Ézaro Waterfall is one of those places where the hand of man has only made things worse, however the rainbows caused by the sprayed droplets that bounce tens of meters high and the noise that flows in the environment manage to abstract you until you get back to the car, and in the end the best thing is to keep that beautiful picture without further ado.

This waterfall is well known by experienced canyoners who descend the complicated Ézaro River. If you want to get started in this sport with an easier descent, you can start with this canyoning activity in the Serra de Outes, another natural space of spectacular beauty in La Coruña.

The Blue Path of Arteixo

From Sabón to Barrañán traveling 6 kilometers of trail, or rather a walk, perfectly enabled that runs between cliffs. The possibility of going down to take a swim in one of the beaches along the route, enjoying the wonderful landscapes that the northern coast of La Coruña offers or seeing cetaceans and many birds well worth taking advantage of a day of sun with the Kids.

On this route you can find 7 of the 9 beaches that make up Las Playas Arteixas: O Reiro, Barrañán, As Combouzas, Valcovo, A Hucha, Repibelo and Sabón.

From Loiba and San Andrés de Teixido

You cannot leave Galician lands without having the Cabo Ortegal Lighthouse etched on your retina, without sitting in “The best bank in the world” (in Loiba), without feeling the vertigo of looking out at one of the highest cliffs in Europe in Herbeira and without making the wish to return to La Fuente del Santo de San Andrés de Teixido.

That little corner of Spain that is A Coruña is full of places full of charm that exude magic and poetry in equal parts. The six that I have presented to you are just an example. If you want to discover everything that this land hides, you should get there and explore it without haste, enjoying its forests, rivers and coasts, from which it is impossible to escape without a smile.

In A Coruña, nature is expressed in verse. But you don't need to speak Galician to understand it. Just as you don't have to be a budding poet to be moved by a sonnet.
